THE BASICS You will
- Disconnect a round plug from the trunk lock actuator and connect it to the keyless system. (Picture # 2)
- Connect a Negative (-) ground wire to an existing screw in the chassis (car body) for power (Picture # 3)
- Connect a paddle plug to the Trunk Light to give the unit 12 volts power (Picture # 6)
- If you choose, solder or wire-tap ONE wire to the taillight plug to flash the lights (Not necessary to lock the car or control the factory alarm) See Parking light install instructions for a picture of the taillight plug..
ACTUALLY DOING IT
*** (If you purchased the Aussie ASSEMBLE YOURSELF version, first read the section on MAX-PLUS assembly).
To install the AUSSIE MAX-PLUS keyless control box, your Trunk Light must be working, and you will need the following tools.
- 8mm wrench or pliers are necessary to remove two screws on the lock actuator.
- Small flat head screwdriver (Jewelers type), to remove plastic grommets in trunk/tailgate.
- Long-Nose pliers and Flash Light are handy, but not necessary.
- A Flat head screw driver is handy, but not necessary.
- Old wire cloths hanger (to use as a stiff pulling wire to pull a cable through a cavity)
FIRSTLY, Disconnect the car battery, or remove fuse “C’ which controls the central locking.
You will be installing the keyless control box in the trunk, under the rear sill, in the small cavity below the rear window brake light assembly. (Picture # 1). When mounted here, the range of the remote fobs is approx 200 feet. The control box will be held in place with a plastic wire-tie. Unfortunately the control box doesn’t fit entirely in the cavity, but it’s by far the best location for radio range. You can also mount the control box under the passenger side taillight, where it’s more protected, but the remote range is limited to 25 feet. If you want to install it under the taillight, write and request the install instructions.
The flat plastic cover at the very back of the trunk covering the rear wall needs removing. This is where the trunk lock and actuator are hidden. (picture # 2) You will NOT need to remove the plastic / carpet sidewall lining cover.
Newer 88-95 models.Securing the rear plastic panel in place, you will find eight little rectangular plastic expansion grommets, four on top, and two either side. (Two of the grommets may be hidden under the Red Metalic warning lables around the trunk lock). Remove these expansion grommets with a small flat head screwdriver. Each grommet consists of two rectangular pieces, one inside the other. Once you have removed all eight grommets, (16 pieces), you will be able to remove the plastic cover, lifting it upwards. Older 1986-88 models have six plastic clips on the inside rear wall you bend to release. Release all six clips, while lifting the plastic panel upwards from the bottom.
Now that you have the rear interior panel removed, you will see the trunk lock mounted in the center, and off to one side, linked by a metal rod, is the “Actuator.’ (Picture # 2) The actuator has connected to it a vacuum line (possibly yellow) and an electrical cable connection via a round plug (usually clear color). You will be un-plugging this cable from the lock actuator and re-plugging it into the Aussie Keyless control box The round plug is secured in place by a plastic security clip. (On newer models, the plug is a black right angle 90-degree plug still with the security clip, as illustrated.)
First detach the metal rod from the actuator by pushing the vacuum piston inwards, then whilst holding the piston in the inward position, pull the lock. Observe how it slots together before you dismantle it). Now the actuator is loose and free to move around, you can un-plug the round plastic wiring plug from the actuator, There is a plastic security clip on the side of the actuator which holds the round wiring plug in place. You need to bend this clip back while trying to separate the round wire plug from the actuator. Pull on the plastic body of the plug. Do not pull by the wires, as you may break them. (If you break the security clip, it’s OK). Using long-nose metal rod out firmly with your other hand. (Pic # 11). Now remove the two 8 mm screws, which secure the actuator to the rear trunk / tailgate wall. (On newer models there is also a piece of plastic running between the vacuum actuator and the trunkpliers will make this process easier. Reconnect the actuator rod and then re-mount the actuator on the rear trunk wall with the two 8 mm screws when finished.

Before mounting the Control Box in place, you will feed the Max-Plus wiring harness through two separate cavities in the trunk sill. Using the stiff cloths-hanger wire, feed the stiff pulling wire through the back most cavity.
Use electrical tape to temporally secure all the loose cables from the control box to the stiff puling wire, pull the wires through the cavity, leaving the multi-pin connector in the cavity under the rear window brake light, and the loose cables at the spring / hinge assembly. (Picture # 4)
Now remove the Trunk Light fixture, and feed the stiff pulling wire in the direction of the passenger side trunk hinge./spring.
Using electrical tape to temporally secure the wire, pull the only RED power wire through the second cavity so it exits at the trunk light. (Pic # 5) Using the paddle doubler provided, connect the RED wire to the positive terminal of the trunk light. (with red wire) (Pic # 6)
Re-install the trunk light lens fixture in its hole, making sure the connectors clear the car chassis
Secure the BLACK negative wire one of the two screws near the trunk hinge spring that secures the fuel door actuator. (Picture # 3).
Continue running the PINK /ORANGE wire to the passenger side trunk light fixture and connect to Pin # 6. Described in the Parking Light Install section.
IMPORTANT: Make sure you line up the Multi-Pin connector on the wire harness as you plug it into the control box.
Now mount the keyless control box with the Max-Plus logo facing inwards. Ensuring the thick BLACK antenna wire is very straight, then feed it through the hole under the rear sill so it lays horizontal and parallel to the rear windshield. (Picture # 7)
Jam the top edge of the control box up into the cavity, and secure the bottom of control-box in place with a long wire-tie, secured to the small ½ inch hole in the center. (Picture # 8 & 9 ). (Don’t pull to hard on the wire-tie, or you may break the control box housing)
Plug the round connector from the Keyless control box into the round wire plug that was previously connected to the trunk lock actuator.
IMPORTANT:Make sure you line the two plugs up correctly as you connect them. There are two flat surfaces inside the plugs. (See illustration below).

Now test the central locking is working. (You can check your alarm later, but it is also working now!)
Re-connect the car battery, or re-install fuse # C and close the doors, trunk and hood.
Push the lock button on the remote control (Button # 1), and the car should centrally lock.
FINDER FUNCTION: By pushing the FINDER button #3 on the remote, the parking lights will illuminate and flash for 30 seconds to assist finding the car in a crowded parking lot at night.
TRUNK-POP FUNCTION: The BLUE / BLACK Stripe wire from the keyless control box is for a possible TRUNK-POP function. To operate, push the Un-lock button # 2 for three seconds. However Mercedes trunks don’t pop, so there’s no reason to install it, but if you have another use for it, you could use it. The BLUE wire sends a negative (-) control signal. You must use an external12-Volt relay for this output.
USING YOUR CAR KEYS: If you LOCK or UN-LOCK the car with your mechanical key, you may have to push the UN-LOCK and then the LOCK buttons on the keyless remote to cycle the system, as it sometimes gets confused if you use the mechanical key.
If you ever have a problem with the system, remove the fuse “C” for 10 seconds and then re-install, or disconnect your car battery and re-connect. This will re-initiate the vacuum pump and keyless.
PROGARMMING ADDITIONAL REMOTES: Up to 6 remotes can be programmed on the Aussie Max Plus. To program additional remotes; open the Keyless control box by removing the four Philips head screws. On the PC board inside, move the BLACK jumper plug from it’s current position (P2) to the Programming Position (P1). (See illustration). The parking lights will flash once to indicate it is learning. Push the LOCK button on the remote control, and the remote is programmed. Re-position the Black jumper plug to its original position when done. Repeat the same procedure for each additional remote to be programmed.
