SECURITY WARNING LIGHT – Flashing LED

Install instructions w124 (Sedan)

.

As the Aussie Keyless system is self-powered and will control both remote locking and alarm activation without this ‘Flashing LED Security Warning Light’ feature. Also I do not currently sell a kit to install this feature, but if you are an electronics enthusiast you may choose to purchase the parts from Radio Shack and include this neat feature.

You need to purhase a small flashing LED light from Radio Shack and install a small resistor to enable it to flash at the correct voltage. You need to solder the LED and the small resistor in series onto the end of some very narrow twin flex wire, like very thin speaker wire. Copper color works out best.

This installation guide describes installing the LED in the rear window brake light fixture, however it could be mounted anywhere in the car you choose to mount it. It is self-powered from the Keyless control box; you only need to run the twin cable, which may be extended to any length. No external power is required.

 Description of task

.

From inside the car, you will drill a tinny hole in the back windowsill ledge (made of fiberglass), at the base of the rear window brake light fixture, and into the trunk area. You will then feed the thin copper colored wire through the hole, from the cabin into the trunk, leaving one foot of cable with the LED globe inside the cabin. You will then connect the twin copper colored wires to the Keyless control box. You can either mount the LED on top of the window Brake light fixture, or leave it at the base of the fixture.

 Actually doing it

.

Make sure all wires are clear from hole drilling before starting the next procedure.

Starting in the back seat of the car, take a 11/64-inch drill, and drill a small hole in the carpet textured rear windowsill, which is actually fiberglass underneath. The hole will be at the base of the rear window Brake light fixture, right where its base meets the sill. (See diagram). Feed the thin color colored wire in through the hole into the trunk, leaving one foot of wire (with LED) inside the car.

In the trunk area, feed the copper colored wire along the roof of the trunk, along the sidewall, under the taillight to arrive at the Keyless control box. Connect the wires as follows: -

Copper wire / White stripe          (+)    << to >>        Brown/Black Stripe wire on control box

Clear Un-marked Copper wire    (-)     << to >>        Orange wire on Keyless control box.

Make the connections with the wire-twist  connectors provided. (Clean insulation).

Now test the LED before proceeding.  Close all doors, hood and trunk and lock the car. The LED should flash when locked and turn off when un-locked. If it will not, then you may have the polarity of the LED in reverse.

You need to decide if to just push the excess wire through the hole into the trunk, and have the LED just sit at the base of the rear window brake light fixture, or youcan mount it on top of the light fixture for better visibility and looks. (It's best there)

Mounting LED in the Brake Light Fixture.

.

The LED cable effectively only passes through the detachable brake light cover/reflector, not the entire light fixture. The wire will be partly exposed, but only underneath the fixture, and mostly out of sight. (Refer to diagram).

To mount the LED in the rear window brake light fixture, you need to drill two holes in the detachable light cover / reflector. The two holes can only be to one side, they cannot be in the center due to the heat generated by the light reflector, which is curved.

(Note: you do not need to remove the metal light reflector from the clip on plastic cover)

.

.

The hole on the underside of the detachable cover / reflector, where the cable first passes through, needs to be 7/32 inch. The hole on top, through which pokes only the tip of the LED, needs to be 13/64 inch. This way, you can push the entire LED and cable through the lower hole, and jam it in tightly to the smaller upper hole. When you re-mount the rear cover reflector, pull the wires tight within the reflector housing, making sure the wires do not contact the reflector, or they may melt with the heat over time. Hold the LED and cable in place with the small wire-tie provided, just above the lower hole. Don't use glue. (To dis-assemble, just cut the wire-tie).

Push any excess copper colored wire back down into the trunk area, and contour remaining exposed wire into the base of the brake light fixture.... Done!
